Report: Bulls Make Untraditional Front Office Hires

Early Thursday morning, NBA insider Michael Scotto reported that the Chicago Bulls have hired former player Acie Law IV as Vice President of Player Personnel. Shortly after, ESPN’s Shams Charania confirmed the hire and announced that Stephen Mervis will join the Bulls as Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations. Law steps up from his previous role as the Brooklyn Nets’ Director of Player Personnel, while Mervis moves from assistant general manager in Orlando to a major leadership role in Chicago.

These moves highlight the busy start for new lead executive Bryson Graham, who recently released Windy City general manager Josh Malone.

Acie Law IV

Law and Graham were teammates at Texas A&M. While Graham transitioned to an off-court role, Law became the 11th overall pick in the 2007 NBA Draft. After four years playing in the NBA and a few more overseas, Law entered scouting with the Sacramento Kings, then climbed the ranks with organizations like the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Brooklyn Nets. Coming to Chicago will be a full circle moment as Law briefly played for the Bulls in the 2009-10 season at 25 years old.

Stephen Mervis

Mervis began his career as an intern with the Indiana Pacers before joining the Orlando Magic in 2014. Like Graham, he steadily advanced through the organization for 12 years, eventually becoming assistant general manager. Mervis primarily served in salary cap management in Orlando. According to CHSN insider K.C. Johnson, Mervis was a top target for Graham upon stepping into the lead executive role.

Graham is taking an unconventional approach with the Mervis and Law hires. Traditionally, the Bulls have filled a direct number-two role, such as general manager, but Graham has instead awarded both men vice president titles. Whether these new additions will wield greater influence over key organizational decisions remains to be seen, though their impact was suggested during Graham’s introductory press conference.

Beyond front office changes, Graham is also evaluating the coaching staff. Johnson reports that several assistants will return, and Wes Unseld Jr. will interview for the head coaching position.
