Report: Cavaliers Won’t Trade Donovan Mitchell This Season
Presse Sports-USA TODAY Sports

According to NBA insider Sam Vecenie of The Athletic, the Cleveland Cavaliers won’t trade Donovan Mitchell this season.

The Cavaliers are planning to ride out this season with Mitchell.

“As of right now — again, things are fluid this time of year — my impression from talking to league sources is that the Cleveland Cavaliers are planning to ride out this season with Mitchell,” Vecenie wrote.

Mitchell is making $32.6 million this season. He will make $34.8 million next season and has a player option worth $37.1 million for the 2025-26 season.

A four-time All-Star, Mitchell is averaging 27.9 points, 5.5 rebounds, 5.7 assists, 1.9 steals and 0.5 blocks this season while shooting 45.7% from the field, 34.9% from beyond the arc and 87.4% from the free-throw line. The 27-year-old is sixth in the NBA in points per game.

The Miami Heat continue to have interest in trading for Mitchell, according to NBA insider Marc Stein. The Heat tried to acquire Mitchell in the summer of 2022. However, the Utah Jazz traded Mitchell to the Cavaliers.

Mitchell has a close relationship with Heat center Bam Adebayo. The Louisville product has been heavily linked to the Heat and New York Knicks, but the Cavaliers continue to send signals that they have no interest in fielding trade offers for Mitchell, who doesn’t have a no-trade clause in his contract.

Cleveland is 22-15 on the season. They are in fourth place in the Eastern Conference standings. It makes no sense for the franchise to trade Mitchell unless he’s unhappy and there are no indications that “Spida” is not happy with the Cavaliers.

Mitchell has career averages of 24.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 4.5 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the Jazz and Cavaliers. He scored a career-high 71 points last season against the Chicago Bulls.
