Report: Cavs may be ‘investigating’ trading Dennis Schroder

“The most recent thing I’ve heard with the Cavs is they’re looking to shave off some salary. I think primarily they may be investigating if they could move Dennis Schroeder,” Windhorst said on ESPN Cleveland.

This doesn’t mean the Cavs are trading Schroder. It means they might be thinking about it. Basically, this is the team of year where president of basketball operations Koby Altman and the front office do a lot of thinking. And possibly some moving and shaking.

Schroder, 32, was acquired from the Kings ahead of the February trade deadline, along with Keon Ellis, for De’Andre Hunter. He appeared in 30 games for the Cavs, averaging 8.2 points and 4.3 assists, shooting 40 percent from the field and just 29 percent on 3-pointers.

If he does get traded, it will be nothing new for Schroder. He’s played for 11 teams in 13 seasons. And that was after spending the first five with the Hawks.

Schroder is set to make $14.8 million next season and $15.5 million in 2027-28, the final year of his contract. 

Along with Schroder, the Cavs have some decisions to make in free agency, beginning with James Harden (more on that here). 

Ellis, Dean Wade, Larry Nance Jr. and Thomas Bryant are all unrestricted free agents. The Cavs hold team options on point guard Craig Porter Jr. ($2.4 million) and two-way man Olivier Sarr.
