According to NBA insider Jake Fischer of The Stein Line, the Memphis Grizzlies want to sign Jaren Jackson Jr. to an extension this offseason.
Jackson Jr. will make $23,413,395 next season in the final year of his contract.
“Sources say that Memphis, in the wake of the Desmond Bane trade, is focused on preserving as much financial flexibility as possible to renegotiate-and-extend the contract of star forward Jaren Jackson Jr. as well as fending off external interest in restricted free agent Santi Aldama.”
The Grizzlies traded Bane to the Orlando Magic for Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Cole Anthony, four unprotected first-round picks and one first-round pick swap on Father’s Day.
Jackson Jr. averaged 22.2 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.5 blocks in 74 games for the Grizzlies this season while shooting 48.8% from the field, 37.5% from beyond the arc and 78.1% from the foul line.
The Oklahoma City Thunder swept Memphis in the first round of the 2025 playoffs.
The Grizzlies have won only one postseason series since drafting Jackson Jr. and Ja Morant, but neither All-Star is expected to be traded this offseason, according to NBA insider Tim Bontemps of ESPN.
“Sources told ESPN that the Grizzlies are not looking to deal either of their two remaining franchise cornerstones,” Bontemps wrote. “The team has spent the past several months clearing salary cap space to complete a renegotiation and extension of Jackson’s contract this offseason, preventing him from hitting free agency in 2026.
“The belief is that an extension will get done, sources said. But the Bane trade gives Memphis an avenue to give Jackson even more on that deal and lock him in long term.”
Jackson Jr. won the 2023 Defensive Player of the Year Award. He has career averages of 18.5 points, 5.5 rebounds, 1.5 assists and 1.9 blocks in 407 NBA games. He’s made two All-Star teams and three All-Defensive Teams.
