The Hawks are open to trading Murray, who is making $17.7 million this season. The Lakers want to acquire Murray, but they don’t want to include Austin Reaves, a player the Hawks are high on.
The Lakers offered D’Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino and draft picks to the Hawks for Murray, who has the same agent (Rich Paul of Klutch Sports Group) as LeBron James and Anthony Davis. A deal didn’t happen because Atlanta is not interested in acquiring Russell, who has a player option next season worth $18.7 million.
A one-time All-Star, Murray is averaging 21.5 points, 5.1 rebounds, 5.2 assists, 1.3 steals and 0.3 blocks this season while shooting 46.8% from the field, 36.8% from beyond the arc and 83.6% from the free-throw line. He has a plus-minus of -95.
According to Stein, head coach Quin Snyder doesn’t want the Hawks to trade Murray. The NBA trade deadline is on February 8.
“Another interesting wrinkle to emerge on the Murray front: League sources say Coach Quin Snyder has lobbied the Hawks to keep him,” Stein wrote in his NBA post on Substack.
It’s unknown what the Jazz offered the Hawks for Murray, who has career averages of 14.8 points, 5.8 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.4 steals and 0.3 blocks with the San Antonio Spurs and Hawks. He made the 2017-18 All-Defensive Second Team and won the 2021-22 steals title.
The Lakers are in ninth place in the West, while the Jazz are in 10th. Meanwhile, the Hawks are in 10th place in the East. If the season ended today, all three teams would be in the play-in tournament.
