The Toronto Raptors need a new head coach.
Despite their best season in franchise history, President Masai Ujiri fired head coach Dwane Casey, and while Ujiri says it’s the most difficult thing he’s ever done, writing was on the wall after Game 3. Per Sportsnet’s Michael Grange, Ujiri berated Casey following the loss. Why? Because the Raptors didn’t double team LeBron James before his game-winner.
Ujiri stormed into the locker room following the heartbreak but not to talk to the players. In fact, it was far worse than that. Instead, the head coach was in his crosshairs. The team’s president didn’t hold back on Casey for his lack of in-game execution. Of course, this intensity is uncommon from Ujiri, but the Raptors have lost early several postseasons in a row.
While it’s the most success they’ve ever had as a franchise, sometimes it’s time for something new. At this point, it’s hard to see all three of Kyle Lowry, DeMar DeRozan and Serge Ibaka staying put. However, it’s easier to fire one person (Casey) than rid the team of three others.
And now the Raptors have yet another decision to make.
