The Mavs can make a free agent run at Russell because Kyrie Irving’s new deal has a lower Year 1 salary than his $43M player option.

The Mavericks need to acquire a point guard this offseason since Kyrie Irving will miss a lot of time next season recovering from his left ACL injury.
Russell played for the Lakers and Nets this season. He averaged 12.6 points, 2.8 rebounds and 5.1 assists while shooting 39.0% from the field, 31.4% from beyond the arc and 83.4% from the free-throw line.
The 29-year-old Russell has played for the Lakers (twice), Nets (twice), Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves. He was the second overall pick in the 2015 NBA Draft. The lefty has career averages of 17.3 points, 3.4 rebounds and 5.7 assists.
Dallas missed the playoffs this year after making the NBA Finals last year. Nico Harrison traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers for Davis and Max Christie.
The Mavericks have the first pick in this year’s draft. They will select Duke star Cooper Flagg.
Irving declined his player option for next season and re-signed with the Mavericks on a new deal.
