Report: Some NBA execs, agents want league to cancel the season

While several NBA owners and players have spoken about the hope to finish the season, some are less enthusiastic about a possible return. CNBC reported that several team executives and players' agents have pushed for the season to be canceled for a variety of reasons.

The biggest concern is obviously whether the NBA season could even start up again in a way that was safe for players, coaches and league personnel. There has been talk of the league finishing in a single location but many feel that does not adequately address the need to keep people safe from the coronavirus outbreak. One agent said he thought commissioner Adam Silver should have cancelled the season by now.

“I’m surprised because (Silver) always errs on the side of caution and doing what’s right,” the anonymous agent said to CNBC.

There are also concerns about money, as many wonder if the cost of starting up the NBA again without fans is really worth it. The league and the National Basketball Players Association agreed that 25 percent of the players'  pay would be withheld starting in May. With that settled, some owners may not be in a rush to start up a league that may not be that profitable.

“What (owners) are saying is, ’If we return, where is the revenue that is going to justify the additional cost of returning?” one team executive said. “They are looking at the cost side versus the revenue side. What revenue comes in now?”

Still, there are just as many concerns about the financial hole the league might find itself in if the season is canceled. Some have projected the NBA could lose out on a billion dollars if no more basketball is played and it's hard to imagine owners would accept that kind of loss unless they absolutely had to.
