Report: Spurs never viewed Chris Paul reunion as a priority

Chris Paul’s return to San Antonio was never really on the table.

According to NBA reporter Justin Russo of Russo Writes, the Spurs did not have interest in bringing Paul back after his one-season stint with the team.

Paul appeared in all 82 games for San Antonio last season, averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists, but the organization ultimately opted to move in a different direction.

Paul instead signed with the Clippers over the summer, a reunion that ended abruptly. The veteran guard was sent home while the team was on the road in Atlanta and has not played since. In 16 appearances this season, Paul averaged 2.9 points, 3.3 assists and 1.8 rebounds.

To officially move on, the Clippers would need to waive Paul and absorb his $3.6 million salary, agree to a buyout, or find a trade partner.

Multiple reports suggested that Paul had become a constant critic of players, coaches and front office personnel, contributing to rising tension inside a Clippers team that sits at 6-20 despite having Kawhi Leonard and James Harden.

Leonard, however, has remained in contact with Paul, according to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

Now 39, Paul has played for the Hornets, Clippers, Rockets, Thunder, Suns, Warriors and Spurs during a Hall of Fame career that includes 12 All-Star selections, 11 All-NBA nods and nine All-Defensive honors. He holds career averages of 16.8 points, 9.2 assists and 4.4 rebounds.

Whether Paul plays again this season remains unclear, and retirement is widely expected once the year ends.

“I don’t regret anything,” Paul told PEOPLE. “I’m actually at peace with everything. More than anything, I’m excited about being around and getting a chance to play a small role in whatever anything looks like next.”
