Donte DiVincenzo did not waste time opting for surgery after suffering a torn right Achilles tendon late last month. He wants to be back on the court as soon as possible, sometime in the early part of 2027.

The Minnesota Timberwolves guard was supposed to be a vital cog in the team’s playoff run in 2026. However, his season ended early, specifically in Game 4 of this year’s first-round playoff series against the Denver Nuggets. Unfortunately, he joins a long and concerning list of NBA players who have suffered a similar fate – a torn Achilles tendon. But don’t tell DiVincenzo that, though. He’s determined to play as soon as he’s able to.

“Several within the Timberwolves organization believe Donte DiVincenzo could return at some point next season,” per Jon Krawczynski.

“DiVincenzo is trying to follow Tatum’s lead. He flew to New York for surgery less than 24 hours after suffering the injury, following a similar timeline that Tatum went through,” the report added.

Boston Celtics star Jayson Tatum returned to play on the court ten months after he suffered a brutal Achilles injury. DiVincenzo is trying to do the same. While ten months falls within the usual time frame for injuries like this, most teams opt to sit out their players for at least a year.

Donte DiVincenzo Given Support by Jayson Tatum

While an Achilles injury has become common in today’s game, people still feel bad whenever a player goes down with it. It is one of basketball’s most devastating injuries. While many have recovered and gone on with their careers without a hitch, some have faded into obscurity after tearing their Achilles. For Donte DiVincenzo, he doesn’t want his injury to be the reason for the slow demise of his career.

And who would uplift the Timberwolves guard’s morale in a tough situation like this? It’s none other than Celtics star Jayson Tatum. With DiVincenzo opting to have surgery less than 24 hours after suffering the injury, he’s clearly trying to follow Tatum’s path of recovery. Hoping he’ll come back stronger than ever.
