Unless something changes, it looks like NBA veteran Jerami Grant may be coming off the bench for the Portland Trail Blazers next season.
According to NBA reporter Sean Highkin of The Rose Garden Report, there’s no real traction on a trade, meaning the veteran forward is likely to start the year as a reserve. Grant is entering the third season of a five-year, $160 million deal that includes a player option. That would make him one of the league’s most expensive second-unit players.
The Blazers are expected to prioritize minutes for Deni Avdija and Toumani Camara, who were arguably their most consistent players last season. That leaves Grant in a tough spot. His best move now may be to play his way back into value and make it easier for Portland to find a trade partner that could use him in a starting role.
Ownership Still Up in Air
Meanwhile, ownership questions remain unresolved. While Jody Allen is still running the team, she is technically not the owner.
As Bruce Schoenfeld of Sportico reported in a recent deep dive, Allen is the executor of Paul Allen’s estate and the sole trustee of his assets. Per the terms of her brother’s will, she is eventually required to sell the team.
The Blazers announced back in May that the franchise is indeed for sale, but there’s no indication a deal is close. Allen reportedly has not rushed to begin the process, and the current value of the franchise is still being evaluated. One thing that does appear certain: the team is expected to remain in Portland once a sale eventually takes place.
