Jacob Tobey, one of the biggest rising stars in the NBA play-by-play announcing world, has reportedly been ousted on Thursday.
Front Office Sports is reporting that Tobey, who has called San Antonio Spurs games since 2024, has been ousted ahead of the 2026-27 season. Tobey has been accused of having an affair with a relative of a player on the team. His girlfriend took to social media to make the accusations.
The accusations went viral on social media and FOS's Ryan Glasspiegel has now confirmed that Tobey will not return in 2026-27.
"Jacob Tobey is out as the Spurs’ lead play-by-play announcer after his girlfriend accused him on social media of cheating on her with the sister of a player on the team, sources told Front Office Sports," Glasspiegel reported.
"Reps for the Spurs and Tobey could not immediately be reached for comment."
Tobey was considered a rising star in the NBA play-by-play announcing world. He was on Front Office Sports' list of rising young play-by-play broadcasters last year.
But now, the play-by-play announcing gig in San Antonio is vacant.
The Spurs are coming off an NBA Finals appearance. San Antonio lost to the New York Knicks in the NBA Finals, but are considered one of the favorites to win it all next season.
San Antonio is led by former No. 1 overall pick Victor Wembanyma, who could be the face of the NBA for the next decade. The Spurs have a lot of other young talent, too, including Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle.
You'll likely see a lot of promising NBA announcers lining up to get this job ahead of the 2026-27 regular season later this year.
