Rockets’ Amen Thompson gets $208 million contract extension

The Houston Rockets secured a big part of their future after signing Amen Thompson to a multi-year contract extension on Thursday.

Thompson has been on a steady ascent since the Rockets selected him as the No. 4 pick in 2023, showcasing his two-way ability and high motor.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reported Thompson’s new deal.

“Houston Rockets’ Amen Thompson has agreed to a five-year, $208 million rookie-scale contract extension with the franchise, sources tell ESPN. The new deal includes a 10% trade kicker,” wrote Charania on X.

Last season, Thompson averaged career-highs of 18.3 points, 5.3 assists, and 1.5 steals, plus 7.8 rebounds in 79 games. He was named to the All-Defensive First Team for the first time.

ClutchPoints’ Brett Siegel stated that the 23-year-old guard has “proven his worth as a long-term building block” for the Rockets, who have a slew of young talent, including Alperen Sengun, Reed Sheppard, Jabari Smith Jr., and Bruce Thornton.

“It would be in the Rockets’ best interest to get him on a deal between 20% and 22% of the cap, which would come out to be somewhere around $200 million in total. Houston offering more than 22% of the cap to Thompson on an extension would come as a little bit of a surprise,” wrote Siegel last month.

Many have raved about Thompson’s all-around impact. He is willing to play off the ball and guard the opponent’s top wingman. His numbers, however, might dip a bit in the upcoming season with the return of Fred VanVleet from his knee injury.
