Rockets Sign Ex-Celtics G League MVP After Surprise Cut
Lucas Peltier-USA TODAY Sports

Of all the players the Celtics were expected to rid themselves of in their quest to get below the dreaded NBA second apron, young point guard JD Davison--the team's second-round pick out of Alabama in 2022--was not high on the list.

Though Davison had not made much of an impact with Boston in three seasons, he did show himself to be of NBA caliber with his sterling performances in the G League, including a 25.1-point showing in Maine this season, with 7.6 assists and 5.3 rebounds. Those numbers were good enough to earn him the G League MVP trophy, a double-edged sword if ever there was one--it's nice to be the best player in the G League, but it is better still to be the worst player in the NBA.

It appeared that the Celtics would be in position to give Davison a chance to prove himself this year, with Jayson Tatum out and the team dealing away Jrue Holiday. But then came the surprising news that the Celtics were cutting Davison on Friday, perhaps setting up the team to gamble on veteran Ben Simmons.

Davison did not remain on the market for long, though. On Saturday evening, word hit that Davison would be signing with the Rockets for next season.

As veteran NBA reporter Chris Haynes wrote on Twitter/X, "Free agent guard JD Davison has reached an agreement with the Houston Rockets, his agent Corey Marcum of EZ Sports Group tells me."

Davison scored just 68 total points in 36 games over three NBA seasons in Boston.
