Rookie shines as Grizzlies adjust to coaching shift

The Memphis Grizzlies are navigating a period of transition following the dismissal of head coach Taylor Jenkins, with interim coach Tuomas Iisalo now leading the team through the remainder of the season.

The coaching change adds another layer of complexity to an already difficult year for the Grizzlies, who have struggled with injuries and inconsistency. However, amid the uncertainty, rookie center Zach Edey is emerging as a bright spot.

On Tuesday night, in the same game that saw Stephen Curry steal headlines with a historic 52-point performance — including 12 three-pointers — to lead the Golden State Warriors to victory over Memphis, Edey quietly made an impact.

The rookie logged a career-high in minutes, surpassing the 30-minute mark for the first time this season, finishing with 10 points, 16 rebounds and four blocks on 4-of-7 shooting.

Despite the loss, Edey remained optimistic postgame, reflecting on his expanded role in the offense since Jenkins’ departure.

"Yeah I'd say that, just with the ball screens, that's kind of always how I've liked to play," Edey said. "I was always at my best when I was a pick-and-roll player, when I was a roller, that's kind of always been my game. Coach basically gave me the freedom to headhunt whenever I want."

The Grizzlies have been slow to fully integrate Edey into a significant role, waiting 61 games before playing him over 30 minutes in a single contest. That patience seemed unusual given his status as a top-10 draft pick and the team's ongoing struggles. At 7-foot-4, the 23-year-old is a rare talent with considerable upside, making his previous limited playing time all the more puzzling.

In the first game after Jenkins’ firing on March 29, Edey showed further promise, posting 14 points, 11 rebounds and three blocks on 7-of-10 shooting in a loss to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Through his rookie campaign, the towering center is averaging 9.2 points, 7.7 rebounds and 1.3 blocks in just 20.7 minutes per game. His 564 total points rank 10th among all rookies this season, while his 79 blocks are the fourth most, and his 470 rebounds are the second highest.

As the Grizzlies approach the final stretch of the season, Edey’s development will be worth watching. With the franchise’s future uncertain, Memphis may need to lean more on its promising rookie, who could play a crucial role in shaping the team's next chapter.
