Jonathan Kuminga views Steve Kerr as someone who has made it clear there is not a defined big-minute opportunity for him every night with the Golden State Warriors, according to NBA insiders Shams Charania and Anthony Slater of ESPN.
Kuminga, a restricted free agent, has met with the Phoenix Suns and Sacramento Kings and likes how they view him on offense.
The Kings and Suns don’t have the cap space to sign Kuminga to an offer sheet, so they can only acquire the swingman via a sign-and-trade deal.
“The Suns and Kings have pitched Kuminga on the type of defined role that has eluded him with the Warriors,” Charania and Slater wrote. “Kerr made several comments after the Jimmy Butler trade that Kuminga’s fit alongside Butler, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green made it difficult to play him consistent big minutes.
“Sources said Kuminga is more enticed with the external options while viewing Kerr as someone who has made it clear there is not a defined big-minute opportunity for him every night with the Warriors.”
Kuminga believes the Warriors have stunted and strung his career along for four seasons. The 22-year-old was the seventh overall pick in the 2021 NBA Draft. He enters next season with career averages of 12.5 points, 4.0 rebounds and 1.8 assists with Golden State.
Multiple sources told Hoops Wire that Kuminga doesn’t have a good relationship with Kerr and wants to leave Golden State. However, the Warriors control Kuminga’s future since the forward is a restricted free agent.
Golden State wants Kuminga back. The franchise recently offered him a two-year, $45 million contract. Kuminga, though, declined the offer because the contract had a team option in Year 2 and there was no built-in no-trade clause.
Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds and 2.2 assists for the Warriors last season in 47 games. He shot 45.4% from the field, 30.5% from beyond the arc and 66.8% from the free-throw line.
