Russell Westbrook is Retiring from the NBA

Westbrook made the announcement with a social media post built around a video narrated by actor Michael B. Jordan, a fittingly cinematic sendoff for a player whose game was never short on drama. He spent his final season as a steadying veteran presence for a rebuilding Sacramento Kings team, averaging 15.2 points, 5.4 rebounds and a team-high 6.7 assists across 64 games. Sacramento finished 22-60, tied for the worst record in the Western Conference, but Westbrook’s individual production stayed strong. He certainly had a couple more seasons left in him.

Westbrook’s 18-year NBA career began with Oklahoma City in 2008 and included stops in Houston, Washington, the Lakers, Clippers, Denver and Sacramento. A former MVP, Westbrook became the second player ever to average a triple-double for a season, eventually accomplishing the feat four times.

He finishes with 27,176 points and more than 10,000 assists, joining LeBron James as the only players to reach both 25,000 points and 10,000 assists. Though his efficiency and fit on later teams were often debated, no one can deny his impact on the NBA. As StatsMuse points out, he was Mr. Triple-Double. He had the most triple-doubles by a Thunder, the most triple-doubles by a Wizard, and the most triple-doubles off the bench.
