When Russell Westbrook volunteered to come off the bench, one of the aspects of his game that improved was his defense. Not needing to use as much energy on the offensive end has allowed a resurgence for his defense - he knows it, too.
After the LA Clippers defeated the Dallas Mavericks for their 9th straight win, Westbrook gave a very candid statement about his defense. A defense that very much limited Luka Doncic in the first and third quarters.
"Ain't too many people defending better than me at this point, if we're keeping it honest," Westbrook said. "But I'll let the numbers speak for that and let y'all talk about it, but if we just keeping it a buck, ain't too many people defending better than me at this position all around the league."
While Westbrook would appreciate some type of defensive honors this season, he doesn't need it. It won't change how hard he defends, nor how hard he plays on the court. That's just simply who he is.
"I don't need it, but unfortunately, I haven't had one because I don't know," Westbrook said. "But I've been very deserving of it at some point of my career. If that's what happens, I'll be grateful, but I'm gonna keep defending my ass off."
The LA Clippers are rolling right now, and they wouldn't be doing it without the energy that Russell Westbrook has been bringing off the bench. Whether it's a clutch rebound or block, Westbrook's imprint has been far beyond just offensive numbers.
