The Sacramento Kings had a disappointing season that left the team with questions heading into the offseason. They traded away guard De’Aaron Fox in the offseason, which left a void in the backcourt. The team needed to prioritize getting a solid point guard in the offseason. Reports indicate they have agreed to terms with journeyman guard Dennis Schroder, signing him to a three-year deal.

ESPN’s Shams Charania reports it is a three-year, $45 million deal for Dennis Schroder. The Sacramento Kings will be his tenth different team over his 12-year NBA career. Last season, he played for the Brooklyn Nets and Golden State Warriors before landing with the Detroit Pistons. He helped the team make the postseason and push the New York Knicks to six games. Many thought the Pistons would try to re-sign him, but the Kings made an offer he couldn’t refuse.
In his career, he has averaged 13.9 points, 4.9 assists, and 2.9 rebounds per game. He joins a Sacramento Kings team that has some quality scorers on the roster. Zach LaVine, Domantas Sabonis, and DeMar DeRozan can carry the scoring load, but they need a facilitator. Schroder can hopefully help the Kings get back into the playoff picture next year.
The Sacramento Kings have been in many trade rumors as of late. Many wonder whether DeRozan might be on the move, but this move might signal they like the roster they have and are looking to make a run. It won’t be easy in the Western Conference. The reigning champs, the Oklahoma City Thunder, are bringing back all of their players. Houston acquired Kevin Durant and has made many other moves to bolster their roster.
The Timberwolves, Lakers, Clippers, and many other teams are loading up to try to dethrone the Thunder and get a championship. Sacramento needs to have an almost perfect season. It isn’t impossible, but the Kings might get caught in no man’s land in the conference if they are not careful.
This is a nice deal for Schroder, who gets rewarded for a solid season. Usually, when players start to bounce around to teams, the most they can get is one-year deals. The German guard cashes in and looks to help the Kings get back to the postseason.
