The Sacramento Kings have had a busy offseason thus far as they have made multiple additions to their roster to chase a playoff spot next season.
While many around the NBA expected the Kings to begin a rebuild this summer after trading De’Aaron Fox last season, Sacramento has instead elected to keep their core of Domantas Sabonis, DeMar DeRozan and Zach LaVine together to battle for a playoff spot next season.
Sacramento also added Nique Clifford and Maxime Raynaud in the 2025 draft and they signed Dennis Schroder in free agency to be their new starting point guard.
While the Kings have already made multiple moves, more could be coming as they have been linked to both Russell Westbrook and Jonathan Kuminga.
On Thursday, Dallas Hoops Journal’s Grant Afseth reported that the Kings are looking to open up a roster spot for Westbrook and that they have been trying to trade Malik Monk to do so.
“The Sacramento Kings have been ‘trying very hard’ to trade Malik Monk this offseason, but they haven’t found a taker,” an NBA source told Grant Afseth of Dallas Hoops Journal. The Kings have been trying to trade Monk to open up a spot for Russell Westbrook, who is an unrestricted free agent. Sacramento wants to sign Westbrook and bring the former NBA MVP off the bench as its sixth man behind Dennis Schroder.”

This is a massive report by Afseth but one that is not a complete surprise as it has been reported that the Kings have been looking to move Monk this offseason after his career-best season last year.
Despite this, moving on from Monk would be a tough decision for the Kings to make as he played a key role for their team last season, especially offensively.
The 27-year-old guard averaged a career-high 17.2 points, 3.8 rebounds and 5.6 assists last season over 65 games, 45 of which he started.
While moving Monk would be a tough decision for the Kings to make, doing so to add Westbrook would be a major help to their point guard depth as Schroder is currently the only true point guard on their roster.
Either way, it appears as though the Kings are determined to bring in Westbrook in free agency and Monk may be the odd man out on their roster.
