De’Aaron Fox is eligible for a contract extension, and it could be a great move for the San Antonio Spurs. It will be a massive commitment, but the move could be significant for the team.
The San Antonio Spurs pulled the trigger on a massive trade in February when they acquired De’Aaron Fox. A former All-Star point guard, Fox started and played 17 games for the Spurs in the 2024-25 season. He averaged a decent 19.7 points and 6.8 assists per game.
He was ready to have a strong start, but he had to undergo surgery on a torn pinky finger tendon. The Spurs only got five games with Fox and Victor Wembanyama playing together. It would be best if the Spurs extended him, as they have not seen the full potential of this partnership.
Without an extension, Fox is the best candidate for a trade by the Spurs. He is in the final year of his contract in the 2025-26 season, so they would want to get value from him. This could maximize Stephon Castle and Dylan Harper’s minutes, but the extension is likely, according to NBA media.
Since Fox can sign an extension with the Spurs on August 2, many are talking about his long-term fit. This includes former NBA champion Iman Shumpert, who sees Fox’s strengths. It would be a positive move for the Spurs, considering Fox could be the veteran who mentors the young players.
Castle is already the Rookie of the Year, but he can still improve his game. The same goes for Harper, who is entering his first year in the NBA. They could have star potential, but it would be best if they eased into the roles and developed gradually.

With Fox, Wembanyama has a legitimate co-star. They could be an unstoppable partnership, especially with their potential as a pick-and-roll duo. Shumpert knows this is significant for all parties, and he would love to see Fox re-sign with the team.
“I love this for them. I think that he brings everything that he needs to bring to the basketball floor. And if you give him enough weapons, that is one of the guys that I feel like knows how to play with his toy,” Shumpert said on NBA Today.
“I think De’Aaron Fox is the fastest thing with a basketball since I’ve seen John Wall. Put two holes in his back; he’s a bowling ball.”
The main point of discussion people have about the Spurs is their logjam at the guard spot. Some feel Fox could get in Castle and Harper’s way, but Shumpert and many others think that won’t happen. During the same NBA Today segment, Marc J. Spears labelled it as a “good” problem for the team.
This is why I’m not worried about Fox/Castle/Harper being able to play together…

“I feel great for their GM. Like, what do you do? It makes it that Harper doesn’t have to rush. There’s no pressure on him. He can take his time, but in two years, what do the Spurs do? Do they have to feel they have to move one of them? That’s the business of it,” Spears followed up on NBA Today.
As long as everyone is on board with the project and the long-term plan, it should be good for the Spurs. It will be a massive investment in Fox and Wembanyama, but the organization wants it. Fox has the utmost respect for Gregg Popovich, and if he receives an offer, the former Kentucky Wildcat will likely sign it.
