The San Antonio Spurs have a shot at disrupting the balance of power in the Western Conference this offseason.
The organization already has a franchise superstar in Victor Wembanyama, and he is surrounded by a talented core.
After all, the San Antonio Spurs have De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and the No. 2 overall pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. So, it would be wise to let the young core develop chemistry and bring an NBA Championship, right?
However, the Spurs also have the option to trade a few of their assets to trade for Phoenix Suns superstar Kevin Durant. Why? To instantly enter win-now mode.
According to recent reports, the Spurs have reportedly contacted the Suns about trading for Durant. Although the Spurs deemed the asking price too high, there’s a chance that they may counter with a better offer.
Or, better yet, the Suns may lower their asking price for the 2x NBA champion to quickly resolve the troubling situation ahead of next season.
However, former NBA player Jeff Teague doesn’t want the Spurs to sabotage their current core in favor of pairing up Durant with Wembanyama, no matter how enticing it may sound.
“I don’t want to see him with the Spurs. I want to see Wemby just have his own moment. He’s still going to be raw, but it’s like KD is such a hooper,” Teague said on the Club 520 podcast.
He added: “KD doesn’t even need a lot of shots to be great. He can get 14 shots, and he might make 12 of them. But what I’m saying is Wemby is a star on his own.
“I don’t want to see him with another star like that, not like a KD star. Fox is a star, but it’s [different].”
Knowing Durant, there’s no doubt he’ll settle in with Wembanyama, or are we forgetting how well he played for the Golden State Warriors?
But that’s not even the issue, as Teague thinks a KD-Wemby duo will be like Luka Doncic and LeBron James on the Los Angeles Lakers.
“It’s like Luka with LeBron. We don’t really like Luka with LeBron. KD is still averaging 27,” Teague confidently stated.
“Let these two young dudes [Fox and Wembanyama] start this new Shaq and Kobe… I’m just saying, a dynamic big and small, let them have their own little thing,” he concluded.
Comparing Fox and Wembanyama to the legendary Kobe Bryant-Shaquille O’Neal duo is certainly a controversial take.
Teague’s point remains to let Fox and Wemby play together instead of giving up on them, as the duo has played just five games together.
