‘See how it goes’: Kyrie Irving Reveals Shocking Celtics Roster Plans in 2018

Kyrie Irving’s time with the Boston Celtics is the last thing he has on his mind.

The mercurial guard—and the rest of the Dallas Mavericks fandom—is still recovering from the shock of Luka Doncic’s trade to the Los Angeles Lakers. While Anthony Davis’ arrival instantly improves their defense, the team’s championship window has shrunk considerably.

However, this wasn’t the first time Irving was linked to the 31-year-old center. Before the shocking trade happened, there was a time when the Brow was considering teaming up with LeBron James’ former running mate in Cleveland.

The team in question? The Celtics.

During the time Kyrie was still the head honcho in Boston and Jayson Tatum was still a young standout in the Celtics rotation, the front office was looking for ways to improve the roster.

Irving revealed that the team was considering making a wholesale roster change that would keep JT in the rotation and have Kevin Durant and Anthony Davis join the squad.

Per masslive.com’s Souichi Terada:

“In 2018, it was a dream for Kyrie, AD, KD to be on one team and still keep JT and let him grow and then see how it goes,” Irving said, according to ESPN’s Tim Bontemps. “But back then, those young guys weren’t ready to be in trade rumors, man. Our locker splintered after that, once they found out. It wasn’t JB or JT, but our locker room splintered once they started figuring out the trade rumors, and our season started going in a different way.”

The shocking revelation may seem irrelevant now that the C’s have a terrifying roster that can dominate the Eastern Conference for the next five years. Boston fans would rather have the team they have now than whatever fantastical squad they were cooking up in 2018.

However, Irving teaming up with AD and Durant while keeping Tatum in the small forward position is a terrifying thought exercise for rival NBA teams. Durant was on the back of winning back-to-back championships with the Golden State Warriors, and Anthony Davis was slowly getting frustrated with his situation in New Orleans. Having the two of them join Kyrie at the TD Garden would have ensured at least a couple of Finals trips if the front office could scrounge up a half-decent roster.

Irving might not have done what he did in his stint in Celtic Green if the dream scenario had happened. However, Boston hoops fans are more than happy with their situation now. While they have the benefit of hindsight, their current trajectory nowadays is much more appealing than it was with such a front-heavy squad.
