The New York Knicks shocked the NBA world on Tuesday afternoon when they announced that they had fired head coach Tom Thibodeau.
This was a surprising move after Thibodeau had helped lead New York to their first Eastern Conference Finals appearance since 2000 along with back-to-back 50-wiin season for the first time since the 1990s.

Despite this, the Knicks felt like it was time for a change after the criticism Thibodeau had received over the last few seasons for playing his starters too many minutes during the regular season.
With Thibodeau now gone, the Knicks have a crucial decision to make regarding who will manning the sidelines for them next season and ESPN’s Shams Charania recently revealed what New York will be searching for out of their next coach.
“A guy that might trust his bench more. A guy that might be a little bit more lenient based on his principles,” Charania said about the type of coach the Knicks will be looking for in their head coaching search.

This is a straightforward answer by Charania and one that is the complete opposite of Thibodeau’s coaching style.
Of course, Thibodeau faced backlash for not relying on his bench during the regular season and playoffs, which played a major role in their playoff exits over the last few seasons.
With this in mind, the Knicks will now look to find a new head coach that will use the bench, though they will need to upgrade their second unit some this offseason as they look to have a larger role next season.
New York could also look to add another star to their lineup this summer to pair alongside their core of Jalen Brunson, Karl-Anthony Towns, Mikal Bridges, OG Anunoby and Josh Hart, though they would likely have to move one in a potential deal.
Despite that, New York’s coaching opening now becomes the top available job in the NBA as their next head coach will inherit a team just two wins away from reaching the NBA Finals this season.
