Draymond Green recently made a bold claim about Steve Kerr’s untoward impact on his basketball career, which made headlines. And now, Shannon Sharpe has stepped into the controversy to pose a significant question to Green.
Sharpe detested Green’s narrative that the Warriors HC, Kerr, restrained his offensive growth. The Club Shay Shay host appeared on the May 1 episode of the Nightcap podcast, co-hosted by Chad Johnson, and challenged Green’s allegations against Kerr that he made on April 29.
Sharpe argued that the Warriors’ offensive system was never meant to restrict the forward. Instead, those team roles were necessary for winning multiple championships.

To back up his point, Sharpe pointed out Green averaged around 16 points during his senior year at Michigan State, but he was never drafted to be a natural high-volume scorer in the pros. He noted a team needs the reliable “janitor” and the “cashier” to keep things running smoothly, not just the “bank president.”
Countering Green’s point about not being given offensive opportunities, Sharpe asked what happened on the court when Curry missed so many games this year. He counted those games as the perfect opportunity for Green to step up and prove his true scoring ability, but he couldn’t manage to do much.
However, the podcast host did acknowledge how important Green is to the team. He praised his skills, which contributed to securing 4 championship rings and defensive awards.
Green shared his thoughts during an April 29 episode of his own podcast. The core of his claim was that Kerr might have actually limited his ultimate offensive ceiling.
The veteran noted that the coaching staff has not designed a single offensive play for him since 2016. That was the exact year Durant arrived and changed the entire system.
Just days earlier, on April 26, Kerr did a detailed interview with The New Yorker. The head coach described their long relationship as complicated and hinted at past conflicts they had to work through. This includes a famous bench incident from December 2025.
Career statistics show his numbers without Curry on the floor remain almost the same as his normal career averages of around 8 points per game. There is no scoring jump in the data despite him getting opportunities during those 155 specific games.
Golden State struggled during the 2025-26 season, dealing with injuries and inconsistency. There are many ongoing rumors as well. There is an end-of-era tension surrounding the trio of Curry, Green, and Kerr.
The question isn’t whether the coach held his player back. It is whether the player ever needed to be anything more. What are your thoughts on this?
