Sixers, Quentin Grimes trending toward short-term agreement

It’s starting to look like the 76ers and Quentin Grimes are headed for a one-year marriage.

Per HoopsHype’s Michael Scotto, talks between the restricted free agent guard and the Sixers haven’t yielded a long-term solution. Instead, the likeliest outcome is a short-term deal — either a “balloon” one-year offer from Philadelphia or Grimes falling back on his $8.7 million qualifying offer, which comes with the perk of a no-trade clause.

Grimes was absent from media day as the two sides continued to work through their options. The deadline for him to make a call is October 1.

The 24-year-old split last season between the Mavericks and Philadelphia, showing significant growth once he landed with the Sixers in February.

In 28 games there, Grimes averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists, while shooting 47 percent from the field and 37 percent from three. Those numbers suggested he’s more than just a 3-and-D piece, and likely why his camp has been angling for a bigger payday.

So far, that hasn’t happened. The Sixers remain cautious with their books as they juggle Joel Embiid, Paul George, and Tyrese Maxey — a trio that managed just 15 games together last year. Philadelphia went 24-58 and missed the playoffs for the first time since 2017.

Basically, Grimes and the Sixers are still talking, but not on the same page. And unless something shifts fast, one year is where this is headed.
