Max Hooper is set to become the next head coach of the Texas Legends, the NBA G League affiliate of the Dallas Mavericks, a person with knowledge of the decision confirmed to DallasHoopsJournal.com.

Hooper has been with the Mavericks organization since the 2022-23 season, holding multiple positions, including assistant coach and head video coordinator. His promotion comes as part of an ongoing coaching staff shuffle that has impacted both the Mavericks and Legends.

Jordan Sears, who served as head coach of the Legends last season, is expected to rejoin Jason Kidd’s staff in Dallas. The Mavericks have also added veteran coaches Jay Triano and Mike Penberthy in recent weeks.

Hooper most recently served as the Mavericks’ head video coordinator, a position he held beginning in the 2023-24 season. He originally joined the staff as an assistant coach in 2022 and held that position for two seasons before transitioning into the video room.

The head video coordinator role is often a stepping stone within NBA coaching circles, with responsibilities that include scouting opponents, analyzing personnel breakdowns, and developing strategic game plans. It requires a detailed understanding of league trends, analytics, and player tendencies—skills that Hooper has demonstrated consistently throughout his time in Dallas.

Though still early in his coaching career, Hooper’s rapid rise within the Mavericks organization speaks to his reputation for hard work, strong communication, and a sharp analytical approach to the game. The move to the Legends marks a new chapter as he takes on the challenge of leading a G League roster filled with developing prospects, two-way players, and hopefuls looking to earn a shot at the NBA level.

Hooper will begin his first season as head coach of the Legends in 2025-26, continuing the Mavericks’ trend of promoting from within and reinforcing the continuity between the G League and NBA levels of the organization.
