Spencer Dinwiddie rips Nets for attempting to sabotage his career after messy exit

Spencer Dinwiddie’s second exit from the Brooklyn Nets was messy behind the scenes. The veteran point guard told his side of the story this week, accusing the team of pressuring him into a pass-first role to boost their other players, then trading him and trashing his reputation.

“I understand Brooklyn was going to make the best decision they could for their organization,” Dinwiddie said on ex-Nets teammate Theo Pinson’s podcast. “To go back to a team that you spent five years, had a lot of success at, basically lead the league in assists because they asked you to kind of help feature their trade pieces and whatnot, and then basically [get] kicked out the door. And for them to re-bring up the cancer label because of what happened in D.C., if another team doubles down on that, it effectively kills your career.”

The Nets re-acquired Dinwiddie, who spent five successful seasons with the team from 2016-2021, from the Dallas Mavericks at the 2023 trade deadline in a package for Kyrie Irving.

After re-joining Brooklyn, he ranked fifth in the league in assists at 9.1 per game over 26 appearances to close the 2022-23 season.

Mikal Bridges, who also joined the team at the 2023 deadline as the centerpiece of Brooklyn’s return for Kevin Durant, turned in a career-best stretch alongside Dinwiddie during that period. The Villanova product averaged a career-high 27.7 points per game on 47/38/89 shooting splits, a performance that led to speculation about whether he could be a top offensive option on a contender.

Dinwiddie said that helping feature Bridges and the Nets’ other trade acquisitions was his primary assignment. The 31-year-old appeared increasingly discontent with that role during the first half of 2023-24, culminating in a trade to the Toronto Raptors for Dennis Schroder at the deadline, after which he was bought out. He claims Brooklyn attempted to sabotage his career following the deal by confirming locker room issues he had during his messy exit from the Washington Wizards.

“You took me from my [sons in Dallas], basically. And then you asked me to do a very specific task, and I did it. ‘We need to stay in the playoffs, and you need to help feature our trade pieces,’” Dinwiddie said of Brooklyn’s message. “Ok, I will do what you ask of me. And then the reward that they gave me was, we’re going to kick you out the door. And, not just that, we’re going to double down on some s**t that happened to you from three years ago. Because if we say it and it’s from three years ago, your career is over.

“So you can extrapolate and guess the conversations or anything else that happened, and blah, blah. And it’s not to get into all those details, whatever. But effectively, that’s what happened.”

Dinwiddie signed with the Lakers to close the 2023-24 season. After the disappointing campaign, he re-joined the Dallas Mavericks on a minimum contract this summer. He’s embraced a reserve role this season, averaging 7.8 points and 3.1 assists on 40/38/87 shooting splits in 21.4 minutes per game.

Jayson Tatum Wanted To Leave The Boston Celtics Because Of One Player

Jayson Tatum Wanted To Leave The Boston Celtics Because Of One Player

Back in 2017, the Boston Celtics made two major moves that would define their future, though not in the way anyone expected. First, they used the No. 3 overall pick to draft Jayson Tatum, a polished scorer from Duke. Then, in free agency, they signed All-Star forward Gordon Hayward to a lucrative deal. At the time, Hayward was entering his prime and coming off an All-Star season with the Utah Jazz. Tatum was the rookie with promise, while Hayward was expected to be the go-to forward. But fate intervened, and everything changed on opening night. Years later, on FanDuel TV, Hayward opened up about the dynamic between him and Tatum. He acknowledged that Tatum felt like he might have to leave the Celtics because of him. “I think, like I said, I was coming off of, I was an All-Star, felt like I was at the brim of my career. Like, we played the same position." "Coach Stevens probably would have been drawing plays for me instead of drawing plays for JT or JB or whoever else me or Kyrie. And, you know, because I got hurt, now he's getting the ball, he's getting more opportunities, and that sometimes is all it takes.” Hayward suffered a devastating leg injury just five minutes into his Celtics debut, an injury so gruesome that it instantly changed the Celtics’ hierarchy. Jayson Tatum was thrust into the spotlight as a rookie and seized the opportunity, eventually helping Boston reach the Eastern Conference Finals that same season. In short, Hayward admitted that if he hadn’t gotten hurt, Tatum wouldn’t have had the ball in his hands as often, or as soon. The offensive pecking order would’ve prioritized Hayward, a proven star with experience under Brad Stevens from their Butler days, over the unproven rookie. From Tatum’s perspective, that likely raised serious questions about his future. If the Celtics were building around Hayward, Kyrie Irving, and later Kemba Walker, where did Tatum fit in? It wasn’t personal, it was positional. Tatum and Hayward both operated as wings who needed touches and space to create. There’s only so much oxygen in an NBA offense, and Hayward being healthy might’ve delayed Tatum’s breakout. That tension, while never explosive, was quietly real. And according to Hayward’s comments, it was enough for Tatum to contemplate leaving Boston altogether early in his career. Thankfully for the Celtics, Hayward’s injury opened the door for Tatum, and Tatum never looked back. He’s now a six-time All-Star, a four-time All-NBA First Team selection, and the face of the franchise. He helped lead Boston to an NBA championship and is widely viewed as one of the league’s top five players. Though he is currently recovering from an Achilles tear suffered during the playoffs, Tatum’s place as the Celtics’ cornerstone is unquestioned. Ironically, what once seemed like a roster logjam may have been the unexpected twist that launched a superstar’s rise.

Steelers Add Two More Injuries to Start Training Camp

The Pittsburgh Steelers kicked off their 2025 training camp at Saint Vincent's College in Latrobe, Pennsylvania. The team arrived in style and with optimism as this new-look roster aims for a Super Bowl run in 2026. The Steelers began their first training camp on the right foot, except for the absences of two notable players. Newly acquired superstar tight end Jonnu Smith and versatile running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson were both non-participants in the first team activities. Following the conclusion of practice, head coach Mike Tomlin was asked about the players who were missing. He shared that Smith was able to participate in individual drills but missed the team session. He wouldn't go into specifics, but he ruled Smith out day-to-day. Despite the early setback, Tomlin didn't seem too concerned about the severity of the injury. Patterson was also with the team, but did not participate in any activities or individual position drills during the first day of camp. Tomlin also ruled him out day-to-day. The injury to Smith is not the way he wanted to begin his tenure in Pittsburgh. Acquired with Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins for Minkah Fitzpatrick, his arrival marked the next offensive weapon for offensive coordinator Arthur Smith and starting quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Smith is coming off the best season in his NFL career. Last year in Miami, he caught 88 passes for 884 yards and eight touchdowns. He collected the fourth-most receiving yards among NFL tight ends and tied for the second-most touchdowns last season. He and fellow TE Pat Freiermuth are set to be a dynamic one-two punch for the offense in 2025. This is Patterson's second season with the Steelers. Last season, he played a versatile role in the offense. He toted the ball 32 times for 132 rushing yards and zero touchdowns. He also hauled in 12 receptions on 14 targets for 80 yards and a score. With these injuries, the rest of the depth chart receives an added opportunity. The rest of the skill position groups on offense will have one less body taking reps away in camp for the time being. That will hopefully give one or two players a chance to shine and make a positive impression on the coaching staff while they wait for two impact players to return to the field.

Major Update On A Potential Goldberg AEW Retirement Match

Major Update On A Potential Goldberg AEW Retirement Match

Few names are more synonymous with Turner wrestling than Goldberg. However, it doesn't appear the WCW legend is likely to get one more match on the platform with AEW. The WWE Hall of Famer wrapped up his career with a retirement match against Gunther. He would lose to the WWE World Heavyweight Champion at Saturday Night's Main Event, seemingly bringing an end to his legendary in-ring career. Unfortunately, it does not appear all were happy with how the bout played out. Goldberg's retirement speech following the match was cut short due to broadcast restrictions, and while he had high praise for his opponent, he expressed major unhappiness about he match itself and its presentation. He made several thinly veiled shots at WWE management for the lack of promotion for the match, and expressed being upset over it not taking place on a Premium Live Event. Could a potential Goldberg match in AEW happen? The talk of his displeasure with the match immediately led to rumors over whether or not Tony Khan and AEW would bring Goldberg in to give him a more fitting sendoff. He made his name on the Turner platform while a member of the WCW roster, so a return to the airwaves on Dynamite or Collision could potentially bring synergy. That, though, appears unlikely. WrestleVotes reported on Thursday that AEW sources indicated there is no direct connection between AEW and Goldberg at the moment. It reports the 58-year-old is still believed to be a under WWE contract as is, so any contact would be risky territory for either side. Additionally, said sources noted it would be surprising to see AEW move towards bringing Goldberg in given its good standing with fans following AEW All In: Texas. AEW, of course, did serve as the landing space for Sting's legendary retirement run, one that came to a close at AEW Revolution in 2024. It is also not clear as to whether or not Goldberg would be healthy for one more match, as he revealed he broke his hand during his final outing.

MLB Insider Proposes Wild Seattle Mariners Trade That Fans Can't Believe

The Seattle Mariners have been heavily linked to Arizona Diamondbacks' third baseman Eugenio Suarez as the trade deadline comes up on July 31. Suarez, 34, is putting together a sensational season season for Arizona, and his 36 home runs trail only Shohei Ohtani in the National League. His 86 RBIs lead baseball entering play on Thursday. He would be a major upgrade to the Mariners lineup, and it would reunite him in the clubhouse, where he played for the M's in 2022 and 2023. As for what it will cost the M's to get Suarez? That's a bit of a guessing game, but the M's do have several interesting pieces to offer the D-backs. Seattle has eight top 100 prospects, and a few intriguing young big-leaguers like Logan Evans. However, former executive Jim Bowden of The Athletic wants the Mariners to make a wild trade for Suarez, as he wrote on Thursday: A package highlighted by middle infielder Michael Arroyo and right-hander Ryan Sloan could be enough to get a deal done. Arroyo, 20, has reached base at a .417 clip this season between High A and Double A. He has 17 homers and 49 RBIs. A second-round pick in 2024, Sloan has a 3.43 ERA over 15 starts this season at Low A. The 19-year-old has logged a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 5.82. Arroyo is currently ranked as the No. 60 prospect in baseball, per MLB Pipeline, and Sloan is ranked No. 61. While the Diamondbacks can ask for that package, it certainly doesn't seem likely. For comparison, the Mariners acquired Luis Castillo at the 2022 trade deadline. That did cost them two Top-100 prospects (Edwin Arroyo and Noelvi Marte), but Castillo was younger, a pitcher, and under control for 1.5 more years. I just can't see the M's making a deal like this for a player five years older who is a rental. Mariners fans couldn't believe it, either: Per @HairlineSports on social media: I’m not even a SEA fan and the package you have them giving up is about 5x more than any other team (Jaxon) wiggins for Geno is enough but Ms have to add BOTH Arroyo and Sloan LOL Sloan might be SP1 for prospects a year from now From Travis Olson: What the hell are you talking about. So you have the mariners giving up two prospects in the top 79 in baseball. Meanwhile the Yankees give up no top 100 prospects. Come on. East coast bias much.
