Spurs Announce Victor Wembanyama Decision on Sunday

Victor Wembanyama needed to play at least 20 minutes in the San Antonio Spurs’ final two regular-season games in order to qualify for the NBA’s end-of-season awards.

He did just that on Friday, logging 27 minutes in San Antonio’s 139-120 blowout win against the Dallas Mavericks. Wembanyama looked great, going off for 40 points, 13 rebounds, five assists, a steal, two blocks and two triples in his limited time on the floor.

The Spurs are back in action on Sunday in the final day of the regular season. They face off against the Denver Nuggets in a home game at Frost Bank Center.

Wembanyama headed into the contest with a questionable tag due to a rib injury. This same issue forced him to sit out on Wednesday against the Portland Trail Blazers.

The Spurs made an announcement ahead of tip-off against Denver, and it isn’t good news for Wembanyama. San Antonio has announced that the two-time All-Star will not play against the Nuggets due to left ribcage soreness.

The silver lining here is that the injury does not sound serious. The Spurs are already locked for the No. 2 seed in the Western Conference, and the result of Sunday’s game will have no impact on their seeding heading into the NBA playoffs. It appears that Wembanyama’s absence against the Nuggets is nothing more than a night off for the 7-foot-4 big man.

The Spurs’ playoff schedule has not been announced, and their opponent has yet to be determined. The No. 7 seed will be the winner of the play-in game between the seventh and eighth seeds, which, as of writing, are the Phoenix Suns and the Portland Trail Blazers.

The NBA playoffs will officially start on Saturday.
