Victor Wembanyama was out of action for the San Antonio Spurs in their last game due to a rib injury. Nevertheless, the Spurs secured a 112-101 home victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Wednesday, with their superstar big man sidelined.

Wembanyama has been in and out of the lineup for San Antonio of late. He’s sat out two out of their last four games as the regular season winds down.

The Spurs are back in action on Friday night, hosting the Dallas Mavericks at Frost Bank Center. This will be San Antonio’s second-to-last game of the regular season. They close out their campaign on Sunday at home against the Denver Nuggets.

The Spurs announced some good news on Wembanyama ahead of Friday’s tip-off. The 22-year-old had been trending in the right direction in terms of returning against the Mavs. The team confirmed his final status right before the game.

The Spurs announced via the official injury report that Wembanyama has been cleared to play. He will return after a one-game absence to try to lead his team against Cooper Flagg and the Mavs.

Wembanyama sustained a rib contusion in Monday’s win against the Philadelphia 76ers. It was not considered serious, but it was significant enough to force him to sit out Wednesday against Portland.

It is worth noting that Wembanyama needs to play at least 20 minutes in one of the Spurs’ last two remaining games in order to qualify for the end-of-season awards. He is currently one of the front-runners for both the Most Valuable Player and Defensive Player of the Year awards.
