Victor Wembanyama has played in all of the San Antonio Spurs’ last four games after returning from a calf injury. The 7-foot-4 big man was forced to miss 12 straight games after sustaining a calf strain in a game against the Golden State Warriors on Nov. 14, and it wasn’t until nearly a month later that he was able to return.
Wembanyama made his comeback on Dec. 13 as he helped lead the Spurs to a 111-109 victory over the defending champions, the Oklahoma City Thunder, in the NBA Cup semifinal.
The Spurs and the Thunder are set to face off again on Tuesday, but the bad news is that Wembanyama has popped up on the injury report.
Wembanyama picked up right where he left off following his lengthy spell on the sidelines. His return has been pivotal to San Antonio’s recent success, with the team winning four straight games since Wembanyama came back. During that stretch, the 21-year-old has produced averages of 19.3 points on 56.0% shooting, 10.3 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 2.5 blocks and 1.0 triples, despite coming off the bench for just 20.3 minutes per contest.
Wembanyama, however, could be heading to the sidelines again for Tuesday’s game against the champs. The Spurs announced on Monday via the official injury report that Wembanyama is questionable to play against OKC due to left calf injury management.
It appears that the Spurs want to give their cornerstone superstar a night off on Tuesday as they continue to manage his return from a calf injury. If Wembanyama does not suit up, Luke Kornet and Kelly Olynyk are the primary candidates to see increased minutes.
San Antonio and Oklahoma City play each other twice in three days. These two teams are set to battle again on Thursday in a highly anticipated Christmas Day showdown. If Wembanyama ends up missing Tuesday’s game, it’s likely that he will be back on the court on Dec. 25.
The Spurs are currently 21-7 and are second in the Western Conference. They are 4.0 games behind the Thunder for the No. 1 seed.
