San Antonio Spurs president Gregg Popovich continues to make encouraging progress in his recovery after suffering a stroke during the 2024-25 NBA season, according to Spurs CEO RC Buford.

Speaking with BasketNews, Buford offered a positive update on Popovich’s health while discussing the longtime coach’s continued involvement with the organization.

“He continues to rehab with more purpose and diligence than I think any of us could have imagined,” Buford revealed when asked about Popovich’s current health status.

“He’s improving, and his presence is always there to support the team.”

Popovich stepped down as the Spurs’ head coach last summer after missing the final 77 games of the 2024-25 season following his stroke. The Hall of Fame coach transitioned into the role of president of basketball operations, ending a historic coaching tenure that included five NBA championships and more regular-season victories than any coach in league history.

Under first-year head coach Mitch Johnson, San Antonio continued its ascent by reaching the 2026 NBA Finals behind Victor Wembanyama before falling to the New York Knicks in five games. Although Popovich was no longer on the sidelines, Buford’s comments underscore that the legendary coach has remained a supportive presence around the organization throughout its postseason run.

The latest update suggests Popovich continues to make meaningful progress in his recovery while maintaining an active role with the Spurs as the franchise looks to build on its breakthrough season.
