San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich has made a major decision about his future.

According to Shams Charania of ESPN, Popovich is stepping aside as head coach of the Spurs after 29 seasons. He will remain with the organization as the full-time team president.

Charania wrote that Popovich has been around the team’s facilities recently and has been involved in the day-to-day running of the franchise. However, he concluded that he could no longer continue with the grind of being a head coach, even though he wanted to return to the sidelines.

Popovich’s decision was likely down to his health, at least in part. The 76-year-old suffered a mild stroke on Nov. 2 and has not coached the team since. His recovery is said to be going well, but concerns arose two weeks ago when he suffered a medical emergency at a restaurant.

It had been reported in February that Popovich’s return to coaching was uncertain.

Popovich is among the most successful and iconic coaches in the NBA's history. He is also the league's winningest coach, with 1,422 regular-season victories, 170 playoff victories, and five NBA titles as head coach of the Spurs.

The Spurs must find a new head coach, though the job should attract plenty of interest. The team, led by Victor Wembanyama, has a strong core of young talent and is well-positioned to become a contender again in the coming years.
