Spurs’ plans for De’Aaron Fox revealed

The San Antonio Spurs are sticking with their $229 million man.

Questions emerged surrounding De’Aaron Fox’s future with the Spurs after a lackluster NBA Finals showing. Spurs general manager Brian Wright affirmed the team’s belief in Fox back in June, just days after the conclusion of the championship series.

A lot can change, however, in the span of a few months. But an ESPN report published Monday indicated that the team stands fully committed to Fox even as training camp season approaches.

Per the report, Fox appears “likely” to start at point guard despite the breakout postseason of incoming second-year star Dylan Harper. The decision is said to remain with Spurs head coach Mitch Johnson, who is expected to decide “solely by what happens on the floor.”

The Spurs may be banking on Fox regaining his All-Star form with an offseason to heal from the ankle injury that bothered him throughout the playoffs.

Even if San Antonio does intend to shop Fox later in the season, keeping him as a starter would probably be in their best interest to keep his trade value high.

Fox is entering the first year of the 4-year, $229 million contract extension he signed last August. Few teams would be interested in trading for a player making that kind of money if he were an overqualified sixth man.
