The NBA Draft is right around the corner and the San Antonio Spurs own the fourth and eighth picks overall. It’s not entirely clear what the front office is going to do just yet, however, the rumor mill claims they have two rookies on their radar.

Victor Wembanyama is a superstar in the making and it’s important for the Spurs to keep building around him. For that reason, recent rumors suggest the front office is potentially eying Nikola Topic and Zaccharie Risacher in the 2024 NBA Draft, according to Zach Lowe of ESPN. At least that’s what some rival executives seem to believe.

“The Spurs will surely look at everything, but flipping both picks for veterans only feels a little rash. San Antonio could trade one, or go the other way, and package them to move up. Rival executives in Chicago pegged Serbian point guard Nikola Topic and French forward Zaccharie Risacher as nice potential fits around Wembanyama. They could also keep both and keep building (mostly) organically.”

A point guard would be a fantastic addition to the Spurs’ lineup. Especially if it’s a facilitating point guard that can feed the rock to Victor Wembanyama. Nikola Topic seems to fit the bill and his height gives him an edge over most point guards in the league. On the other hand, Zaccharie Risacher is one of the more exciting prospects in this years NBA Draft, however, he’s projected to be a top two selection.

Either way, San Antonio is well on their way to becoming a playoff contender once again. There’s a possibility the front office decides to trade the picks for some veteran players, or even move up in the NBA Draft. Regardless, the Spurs are going to be one of the hottest teams in the rumor mill throughout the offseason.

Spurs future outlook

The Spurs have an incredibly bright future. Not only do they have Victor Wembanyama but they already have some decent complimentary pieces around him. Guys like Jeremy Sochan, Devin Vassell, and Keldon Johnson are great rotational options. However, San Antonio would largely benefit by acquiring another star player.

That star could be found in the NBA Draft or free agency. There’s even a possibility the Spurs make a trade now that they own the fourth and eighth picks overall. Either way, San Antonio’s future looks bright. But they must add the correct pieces around Victor Wembanyama.

Adding a talented point guard would go a long way in unlocking the Spurs’ potential. The superstar combination the Denver Nuggets have in Nikola Jokic and Jamal Murray is one of the best in the league. San Antonio would be smart to replicate that for themselves. So, hopefully they can find that star point guard this offseason. If they do, the Spurs could show vast improvements next year.
