Spurs set to break NBA attendance record in Friday's return to the Alamodome

On Friday, when the San Antonio Spurs return to its old home, the Alamodome, to take on the Golden State Warriors, the franchise will shatter an NBA attendance record that has stood for 25 years. 

The Spurs announced Wednesday that the team had sold 63,592 tickets for Friday's game at the Alamodome against the Warriors. 

That number will top the NBA's previous attendance record set in 1998 when 62,046 fans packed the Georgia Dome to watch the Atlanta Hawks host the Chicago Bulls. 

According to Jeff McDonald of the San Antonio Express-News, the Alamodome can fit 65,000 fans, and tickets are still available. 

Last May, the Spurs received approval from Bexar County to play four home games during the 2022-23 season away from the AT&T Center, including one at the Alamodome. 

On Dec. 17, the Spurs traveled to Mexico City, Mexico, where they hosted the Miami Heat in a 111-101 loss. In April, the Spurs will play two games at the Moody Center in Austin, Texas. 

Opened in May 1993, the Alamodome hosted the Spurs for nine seasons until 2002, when the team moved into the much more basketball-friendly AT&T Center. 

Along with hosting the Spurs, the legendary grounds still hold the annual Alamo Bowl and will play host to the XFL's San Antonio Brahmas in February.
