Spurs signing Mason Plumlee to 10-day contract

The Spurs are adding some frontcourt insurance, signing veteran big man Mason Plumlee to a 10-day contract, per ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Plumlee became a free agent earlier this month after being waived by the Thunder, who had just acquired him from the Hornets. The Spurs had an open roster spot and didn’t need to make a corresponding move. That opening came when San Antonio waived Jeremy Sochan, who later landed with the Knicks.

Plumlee turns 36 next month and has settled firmly into journeyman territory. He has appeared in 874 regular-season games across stops with Brooklyn, Portland, Denver, Detroit, the Clippers, Phoenix and Charlotte, including two separate stints with the Hornets.

For his career, Plumlee owns averages of 7.9 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.4 assists in just under 22 minutes per game. He played a regular role for the Suns a season ago, but his minutes dried up this year in Charlotte, where he appeared in 14 games and averaged fewer than nine minutes a night.

For the Spurs, this is a low-risk, short-term look. Plumlee gives them a veteran body, some passing feel, and a bit of stability up front coming out of the All-Star break.
