Giannis Antetokounmpo’s future with the Milwaukee Bucks has remained uncertain for months, as rumors from insider Shams Charania suggested the Greek Freak might test the market with another team. Now Bucks fans can breathe easier, since signs indicate the 30-year-old superstar will stay in Milwaukee.
One person who felt disappointed was three-time NBA champion Stacey King. The former player and now Chicago Bulls commentator joked that the Bulls might have convinced Giannis to come to Chicago if they had focused on what he values most, his family.
King discussed the topic on the latest episode of his Gimme The Hot Sauce podcast. He started by joking that Thanasis Antetokounmpo’s one-year, $2.9 million deal showed Giannis was getting everything he wanted from Milwaukee to ensure he stays put.
“As long as Giannis is there, whatever Giannis wants, Giannis is gonna get. If Giannis wants all his brothers on his squad, which I’m really surprised he hasn’t really pulled that card,” King remarked.
King also pointed out that Giannis’s other brother, Kostas, has been delivering strong performances in the EuroLeague.
“I’ve been waiting to see if he would pull the string to get his other brother over there,” he continued.
King highlighted that Chicago boasts one of the largest Greek communities in the United States, with an estimated 150,000 residents. He joked that if it were his call, he would have brought in Kostas, Thanasis, and even Giannis’s mother to guarantee the Greek Freak landed with the Bulls.
“That would have been awesome if we could have done that. I would have hired his mom. See if she wanted to come in and be an assistant coach. Her job would have been to just run in the kitchen, make sure we have Gianni’s food,” Stacey King jokingly said.
Even though King was joking, the idea of signing Giannis Antetokounmpo’s mother, Veronica, does not sound completely outrageous. She could bring energy and encouragement to whichever team her son represented, while also giving Giannis an emotional lift. The 2021 NBA Champion has often shown just how much he treasures his mother.
Giannis might laugh at King’s playful suggestion about signing his entire family, but the truth runs deeper. Family drives everything he does. Keeping Thanasis in Milwaukee goes far beyond a roster move. It shows that the two-time MVP’s commitment to the Bucks is closely tied to the love and backing he receives off the court.
