Steph Curry, Jimmy Butler and the Golden State Warriors needed an extra period to settle Thursday’s game against the Denver Nuggets. After a hard-fought battle, it was Golden State that prevailed in overtime, 137-131.
After scoring 23 points in their season-opening win against the Los Angeles Lakers on Tuesday night, Curry exploded for 42 points against Nikola Jokic and Co. The former back-to-back NBA MVP shot 14-of-25 from the floor overall, 6-of-12 from distance and 8-of-8 from the charity stripe, to go along with six rebounds, seven assists, three steals and a block in 37 minutes of action.
The Warriors are now up 2-0 after securing their first home win of the season.
Butler, who dropped 31 points on the Lakers on Tuesday, kept it going on Thursday night. The six-time All-Star registered 21 points on 6-of-15 shooting, five rebounds, six assists, three steals and zero turnovers in 39 minutes of play. Butler hit a couple of triples as well, with his second one coming deep in overtime to seal the victory for Golden State.
After the game, Curry spoke with ESPN’s Malika Andrews for his customary postgame interview. Andrews asked Curry about how he appeared to have requested Butler to bust out his famed night-night celebration after the latter’s clutch three in the dying moments of the game. The Warriors guard admitted that Butler ignored his plea.
"Yeah, I was hoping he'd get it back, but he left me on an island," Curry said. "Draymond (Green) hit one last year, so I thought I could share the honor."
Butler’s clutch three came with just 41.1 seconds left in the extra period. It put the Warriors up by six points, 133-127. Curry acknowledged how important that triple was from Butler.
"Big shot to kind of seal it," he said. "For us to get a home-opener like that, to have that kind of energy is pretty special."

This is Butler’s first full season with the Warriors following his mid-season trade from the Miami Heat in February. He’s had plenty of time to train with his teammates during the offseason, and the results are already showing early.
Butler, Curry and the rest of the Warriors will be looking to improve to 3-0 on Friday. They play on the second night of a back-to-back set against the Portland Trail Blazers in a road game at Moda Center. Tipoff is scheduled for 10:00 p.m. ET.
