There was a lot of uncertainty surrounding Jonathan Kuminga’s future with Steph Curry and the Golden State Warriors during the offseason. The 6-foot-8 forward was a restricted free agent and entered into negotiations with the team for a new contract. Kuminga, however, did not see eye to eye with the front office and talks dragged out for weeks.
Ultimately, both parties found common ground. This came in the form of a two-year deal worth $48.5 million. This new contract will keep the former No. 7 overall pick in Golden State through 2027, with the Warriors holding a team option on his deal for the 2026-27 season.
Kuminga has had a strong start to the new season. In three games played, the 23-year-old has averaged 15.7 points on 55.2% shooting, 7.3 rebounds, 4.0 assists, and 1.0 steals as Golden State’s starting power forward. Kuminga is also knocking down 2.0 triples per contest on a 50% clip.
Head coach Steve Kerr shared his thoughts on Kuminga’s start to the campaign following the Warriors’ 139-119 blowout loss to the Portland Trail Blazers on Friday. The four-time NBA champion coach had nothing but high praise for his young forward.
"His passing has improved dramatically," Kerr told reporters, via NBC Sports Bay Area. "He has made so many good passes, not only in games but also in practices. I think he's seeing the floor better. I just like the approach, I like the vibe that he's bringing. He's confident. He definitely feels like part of the team and what we're trying to do.”
Kerr also touched on Kuminga’s offseason contract dispute, revealing how Curry and the rest of the team’s leadership have reacted to the same.
“After all the contract stuff I just think his teammates have been so good, Jimmy [Butler], Steph [Curry], [Draymond Green] all welcoming him back with open arms and reminding him that contract stuff is contract stuff," Kerr revealed.
In addition to guiding Kuminga, Curry himself has been on a tear to start the season, averaging 33.3 points and 5.3 triples in his first three contests.
The 2-1 Warriors are back in action on Monday. They have a back-to-back set, starting with the Memphis Grizzlies, followed by a matchup against the Los Angeles Clippers on Tuesday. Golden State will host both games at Chase Center.
