As the Golden State Warriors try to prolong their championship run with Stephen Curry, Draymond Green, and Jimmy Butler anchoring the roster, the rest of the league continues to keep tabs on Giannis Antetokounmpo and the Milwaukee Bucks. If Milwaukee falters early in the season, Antetokounmpo could be tempted to demand a trade. Still, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith has cautioned every team across the NBA—do not allow the Warriors to be the ones to acquire him.
Smith broke down just how unstoppable the Warriors could become if they managed to add Antetokounmpo to their core trio during his appearance on ESPN’s First Take.
“You want to talk about unfairness in the National Basketball Association? Don’t let Giannis get to Golden State with Stephen Curry,” Smith said.
“If that happens, it wouldn’t be fair to the basketball world for those two to be wearing the same uniform on the court, especially if you kept a Draymond Green, who’s your point-forward facilitator, who’s your energizer bunny, and who feeds Steph Curry better than anybody on the planet.”
For Smith’s proposed Warriors roster featuring Antetokounmpo to become a reality, Golden State would have to construct a trade package centered on Jonathan Kuminga, who remains ineligible for a trade until January 15. Kuminga’s recent two-year, $48.5 million contract extension removed his no-trade clause for this season.
However, the Warriors would still need to include other assets such as Moses Moody and Buddy Hield to make the financials work, a deal that probably wouldn’t catch Milwaukee’s interest.
“If you have those two in the same uniform, as Giannis Antetokounmpo, forget the betting odds, and all that stuff, and Vegas, Golden State would coast to the title,” Smith added.
If the Milwaukee Bucks choose to move Giannis Antetokounmpo, the New York Knicks, San Antonio Spurs, and Oklahoma City Thunder would likely lead the chase with their stockpile of valuable assets. The Golden State Warriors, on the other hand, would struggle to put together a trade offer strong enough to rival what those teams could bring to the table.
