Stephen Curry expresses willingness to play in 2024 Olympics

On the heels of his walk-off win at the American Century Celebrity Championship, Golden State Warriors star Stephen Curry appears interested in adding to the already lengthy list of accomplishments.

During an appearance on Monday’s "NBA Today,” the four-time NBA champion did not oppose the prospect of playing for his Warriors HC Steve Kerr at the 2024 Summer Olympics. Kerr, who was named the head coach of the United States Men's National Team in 2021, will lead Team USA at the 2023 FIBA World Cup later this summer.

“[An Olympic gold medal is] the one piece of the resume that [Kerr] always likes to joke that I don’t have,” Curry said. “He’s already kind of recruiting for next summer ... I have no idea what the next summer will look like. It obviously is an extra bonus that coach Kerr is leading that charge. I love to play for him any day of the week. We’ll see how it goes come summer of 2024.”

As Curry mentioned, Kerr has been laying the groundwork for his starting point guard to join him in Paris for some time. Kerr kicked off his Olympic recruiting campaign following Golden State's 2022 NBA Finals win when he joked that Curry "really needs to concentrate on making the 2024 Olympic team.”

Curry last played internationally during the 2014 FIBA World Cup, winning the gold medal after averaging 10.7 points, 2.8 rebounds and 2.9 assists in nine games. The 35-year-old was also a member of the 2010 FIBA World Championship-winning USA team but had a minimal role, playing just 10.6 minutes per game.

An appearance at the Olympic Games is long overdue for Curry, as he has previously expressed interest in competing, though a variety of circumstances prevented him from doing so. Curry wasn't invited to join the dominant 2012 Olympic Games roster, while knee and ankle injuries forced him to withdraw from consideration for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

Curry then declined an invitation to the re-scheduled Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games to focus on his health and the Warriors' upcoming season. At the time, Curry had "no regrets at all" about his decision, which worked out well as Golden State went on to beat the Celtics in the 2022 NBA Finals.

Considering Curry is 36 when the summer games come around, this may be his last chance to fulfill his Olympic goal. If his health and situation permit, he'll be the leader of what is expected to be an incredibly talented roster that should include Jayson Tatum, Donovan Mitchell and Anthony Edwards.

The 2024 Summer Olympics, hosted in Paris, France, will be held from July 26 to Aug. 11.
