Stephen Curry makes ‘underpaid’ argument about the NBA as Jonathan Kuminga awaits Golden State Warriors resolution

Stephen Curry made some comments about the NBA’s salary situation, which applies to Jonathan Kuminga and the Golden State Warriors.

The Golden State Warriors haven’t made much of a decision when it comes to Jonathan Kuminga. The young forward is still waiting for the team.

Kuminga wants to leave to pursue his All-Star ambitions. During his time with the Warriors, he hasn’t gotten as many playing opportunities.

However, he hasn’t gotten any offers in free agency. And the Warriors shut down Kuminga’s sign-and-trade with the Kings.

The Warriors plan on bringing Kuminga back on a short-term deal, only to trade him before the deadline. However, Warriors fans don’t like this plan for Kuminga.

As things stand, the Warriors’ free agency is being held up by Kuminga. And Stephen Curry’s recent comments about NBA salaries suggest there is a reason for it.

Stephen Curry blames new CBA for NBA players getting paid less

Stephen Curry did an interview with Complex recently. When discussing the recent trend of NBA players getting smaller contracts, Curry explained how the new CBA has impacted them.

Curry believes that now, teams are in a difficult position to pay players what they want. But he does add that the CBA should be changed so players can earn their just due.

“I think because the way the CBA is structured right now, we can’t participate in equity… It’s a partnership with the league, and we’re on the short term of that revenue, right?

“Like those numbers sound crazy, but what the league is doing from whatever era you want to compare it to, to now is probably, you know, 10 times that.

“The idea that we can’t participate in equity while we’re playing is a part of why I would say yes, we are underpaid, because you want to be able to participate in that rise.

“I know we’re blessed to be in a position where we’re playing basketball for a living, and these are the type of checks that people are earning.

“I think it’s all deserved because it’s a special commodity. It’s a special industry that probably won’t go anywhere because that entertainment value is there.

“But yeah, I feel like hopefully sooner than later those rules change a little bit so that players can participate more in the upside of team equity, the league valuations, and all that type of stuff. Just because, I think we deserve it.”

Jonathan Kuminga not getting the right offer from Golden State Warriors

The situation that Stephen Curry described above is exactly what Jonathan Kuminga is experiencing with the Golden State Warriors.

Kuminga wants to earn about $30 million a season in his next contract. However, due to the new CBA, salary caps are very rigid, and unless you’re a max-level player, it’s hard to earn that kind of money.

This is why the Warriors haven’t already re-signed Kuminga, nor have other teams approached him with an offer.

For what it’s worth, the Warriors players want Kuminga to return next season. But for whatever reason, Steve Kerr doesn’t see him as a starting-level player.

Hopefully, both sides can agree on a new deal soon and resolve this situation. The longer this goes on, the more Kuminga’s career gets derailed, and the Warriors look bad.
