Stephen Curry was the driving force behind the Golden State Warriors’ 137-131 victory over the Denver Nuggets.
Stephen Curry scored 42 points, including six three-pointers, in a game that ended in overtime. He had several incredible moments, especially in the late fourth quarter.
However, the win required overcoming a historic performance from the Nuggets’ Aaron Gordon, who scored an exceptional 50 points.
Aaron Gordon was hyper-efficient, shooting 81% overall and sinking 10 out of his 11 three-point attempts.
Following the game, Curry shared his reaction to Gordon’s explosive night, detailing the Warriors’ attempts to adjust their defense, specifically leveraging veteran Al Horford.
“Aaron Gordon had an unbelievable night shooting the ball. So, we tried to keep some size on him, and then Al [Horford], we’ve seen it again, playing against him for years,” Curry said.
“He’s pretty good switching one through five, and it allowed us a little bit more versatility on defense to just keep a man on the ball and not to be in crazy rotations,” he added.
Despite Gordon being unstoppable, the Warriors’ defensive adjustments were instrumental in slowing the Nuggets‘ offense overall.
Denver exploded for 70 points in the first half but was held to just 50 points in the second half.
Curry also revealed that the key to the Warriors‘ victory, aside from his spectacular performance, was their offensive efficiency and ball security.
“Obviously they scored some points, but then on the other end, we were just really decisive in getting to our spots. And we only had eight turnovers in a game, [one in] overtime game,” Curry explained.
“And if you get shots up, you don’t give, especially a team like Denver, easy basket in transition, then you give yourself a good chance,” he added.
The combination of solid, adaptable defense and efficient offense with minimal turnovers proved to be the key behind the Warriors’ 2−0 start to the season against two strong Western Conference contenders.
And it seems like their championship window is not closed yet.
