Jonathan Kuminga dominated conversation after the Golden State Warriors defeated the Los Angeles Lakers 119-109 in their season opener.
The young forward produced 17 points, nine rebounds, and six assists while shooting 66.7% from three-point range.
That performance created belief among fans that Jonathan Kuminga successfully proved his worth following the lengthy contract saga during the offseason.
After the game, Draymond Green appreciated Kuminga’s performance, particularly his crucial defensive rebounds late in the contest.
Stephen Curry also reacted positively to Kuminga’s effort, especially his assignment guarding Luka Doncic throughout the game.
“I know Luka got his numbers, but he [Kuminga] took the challenge trying to make him work for everything, and it’s great to have a point of attack defender like that, that can again take the challenge. He’s going to continue to get better at that,” Curry stated.
While Doncic still scored 41 points with 12 rebounds, Kuminga demonstrated consistent hustle and proved capable of defending opponents’ best players as the Warriors envisioned when developing him.
Kuminga recorded one steal and six defensive rebounds throughout the game, showed he could be a big help for Warriors’ defensive aspect.
Curry also emphasized Kuminga’s complete contribution beyond statistics, highlighting his effort plays and basketball intelligence.
“But those 50/50 balls, decisive plays. Especially in the second half when we started to get the ball moving. If he didn’t have anything, he got off it. Ball came back to him in the corner, he hit some big threes, got to the lane, and the offensive rebound was huge.”
“So, trying to be in the right place at the right time and continue to make impactful plays. Like we all try to do that because that’s what helps you win. And the more he can do that, the more he helps himself and help us,” Curry explained.
Trade speculation has surrounded Kuminga throughout the offseason and into the season.
However, if he maintains this two-way performance level, providing offensive production while effectively defending opponents’ best players, the Warriors might prefer retaining him as an important rotational piece.
