As the veteran core of the Warriors nears the end of its run, Stephen Curry has made it clear that he expects more from three of the team’s emerging players.

Following a poor showing against Portland, Golden State needed to respond. The task fell to the younger members of the squad, and they delivered in a win over Memphis.

Before tipoff, Steve Kerr had publicly challenged Brandin Podziemski to raise his level after a sluggish start. Podziemski answered with 23 points against Memphis. Jonathan Kuminga also stepped up, finishing with a game-high 25.

Moses Moody rounded out the group’s effort by adding 20 off the bench, giving the Warriors exactly what Curry had been hoping to see from their next wave of talent.

Stephen Curry urges Warriors youngsters to step up as veterans age

After the Warriors’ win over Memphis, Stephen Curry spoke to the media about the younger players stepping up offensively. When asked about the youngsters outscoring the veterans, Curry said it was exactly what he wanted to see more of moving forward.

Curry said that while he and the older players would remain in leadership roles, they needed younger teammates like Kuminga and Podziemski to take on bigger responsibilities throughout the regular season.

“It’s huge. Me, Draymond, and Jimmy are trying to be the anchors. But you have JK playing the way he has to start the year,” Curry said.

“BP is starting to figure out his spots, his confidence, and keeping things simple. Now you have Mo back, you add another guy who can space the floor, knock down shots.”

“Will coming in and changing the game defensively for us, cutting off the ball. Everybody has value. We need everybody to contribute on a night-to-night basis.”

“If it’s not your night stat-wise… come with right energy. Because we feed off of that.”

“There’s not a lot of iso-ball in our offense. So you have guys who have confidence if a possession says it’s your turn to finish it. They’re able to make plays.”

“There will be games when all of them are out there are going to have two or three that can fill that gas tank as well.”

He also talked about how their system requires everyone to have confidence so they can step up when needed. He knows there will be games where older players sit out completely and expects others to be ready for those moments too.
