Even though the NBA has rules that penalize flopping, many players have found loopholes to exploit just to sell the call to referees. While certain Thunder players are usually associated with that kind of practice, apparently, some Spurs players are doing it too. Stephon Castle even admitted it in front of the media.
Most players who have a good free-throw percentage will always welcome the idea of going to the line to score. No defenders in the way. Just the player and the uninterrupted view of the basket in front of him. And that’s why getting to the line has become advantageous in basketball these days.
When asked by reporters whether the Spurs have played strictly ethical hoops, Castle admitted he tries to put pressure on the refs to blow their whistles.
“I sell calls, too, sometimes. I mean, I can’t lie. If it’s too egregious, you know, the refs aren’t gonna bail you out. They are gonna make the better team win,” Stephon Castle’s answer to a reporter’s question.

Nothing surprising about his answer. Lots of players will try to sell the call to the game officials. But does this mean that there’s something wrong about how the game is currently officiated? If you ask Adam Silver, he sees nothing wrong with it.
In just his second year, Stephon Castle is going to play at the NBA’s grandest stage. It’s important to note that this is the 21-year-old’s first postseason experience as well. Although there were some bad games here and there, Castle has played well for San Antonio, despite being inexperienced at this stage.
We can safely say that most players from this Spurs team, especially their core guys, are inexperienced as well. But they do need their sophomore guard to become a defensive pest in the Finals because he’ll be tasked with covering Knicks star Jalen Brunson for most of the series.
Can Castle limit Brunson’s production? Guess we’ll all see.
