The Golden State Warriors have battled injuries early in the 2025–26 season, leaving the team shorthanded as they enter Monday’s game against the Utah Jazz looking to snap a three-game losing streak while sitting at 9-9.
One of the most significant setbacks has been forward Jonathan Kuminga, who has missed the last five games with knee tendinitis. Before the injury, Kuminga was off to a strong start, averaging 13.8 points, 6.6 rebounds and 2.8 assists while shooting 47.8% from the floor, 32.4% from three-point range and 77.1% from the free-throw line.
His future with the Warriors remains uncertain, as he has been mentioned in trade discussions for much of the past year.
Entering Monday’s game against Utah, Kuminga was expected to return during Golden State’s upcoming homestand.
However, head coach Steve Kerr offered a troubling update on his status. Kerr explained that Kuminga was unable to participate in scrimmage work at practice on Sunday and may need to undergo imaging on his knee soon (h/t Nick Friedell of The Athletic).
When asked what Kuminga was able to do, Kerr responded, “We did live drill work and he barely did any of that. Not moving well."
“Not moving well.”

The setback comes at a pivotal point in Kuminga’s career. Drafted seventh overall in the 2021 NBA Draft, the Warriors bet on his athleticism and long-term upside, and he rewarded them by contributing to their 2022 championship run as a versatile forward off the bench.
Now in his fifth season, Kuminga has grown into a dynamic two-way player known for his explosive athleticism, defensive versatility and ability to attack the rim. Yet his inconsistency last year raised questions about his role, fueling trade speculation that continues to follow him.
With his age and contract making him attractive to rival teams, Golden State faces a difficult decision: whether to keep developing him as a focal point or explore moving him to maximize the current championship window. For now, that decision is complicated further by his knee injury, which threatens to stall both his progress and the team’s plans.
