The Golden State Warriors’ 2024-25 season came to a disappointing close in the second round of the NBA playoffs.
Overall, it was a successful season for Golden State after they were able to turn things around at the trade deadline by adding Jimmy Butler to their veteran duo of Stephen Curry and Draymond Green.
After adding Butler, the Warriors moved from 11th to seventh in the standings and made it to the second round of the playoffs where they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games.
Now the Warriors enter a crucial offseason as they try to retool their roster around their aging core but they also have a massive decision to make regarding their young forward Jonathan Kuminga.
Kuminga is a restricted free agent this summer and his future in Golden State is in doubt after he fell out of the rotation early in the playoff before leading the Warriors in points in the second round.
With his future in The Bay in doubt, head coach Steve Kerr made a brutally honest statement about him on Wednesday.
“It's a tricky one because Jonathan obviously is gifted and wants to play a bigger role and wants to play more,” Kerr said. “For me, I've been asked to win, and right now he's not a guy who I can say I'm gonna play 38 minutes with the roster that we have, Steph and Jimmy and Draymond, and put the puzzle together that way and expect to win. Doesn’t mean he’s not a really good player, doesn’t mean he’s not talented. It just means the fit and with the roster we have, it is tricky. There’s no question.”
This is not a promising statement by Kerr regarding Kuminga’s future with the franchise as it is clear that Kerr does not see him being part of their rotation due to his fit.
Because of this, Kuminga is likely going to be on a new team next season either through free agency or via a sign-and-trade deal as the Warriors try to retool their roster into a championship contender next season with Curry, Butler and Green leading the way.
