Steve Kerr believes the Golden State Warriors already have someone who can fill the void left by Andrew Wiggins, and he does not think it is Jimmy Butler.
After a long offseason of questions about their future, Golden State have put together a squad that looks ready to make some noise in the playoffs.
The front office brought in Al Horford, De’Anthony Melton, and Seth Curry, while two-way players LJ Cryer and Will Richard have impressed early on.
Add to that an All-Star like Jimmy Butler joining Stephen Curry’s side, and there is plenty of reason for optimism. In fact, Curry has already said he believes this team is even better than the one that won it all in 2022.
Still, one thing remained unclear over the summer: who would step into the role Andrew Wiggins played during that title run? While Butler brings his own strengths to the table, Kerr has someone else in mind for that specific job.
Kerr had plenty of good things to say about Moses Moody following the Warriors’ pre-season win over the Portland Trail Blazers.
Moody, who had already impressed against the Lakers, put in another strong showing on both ends. The coach believes his performance highlighted why he is capable of filling the role Wiggins left behind.
“He got to guard the ball. He got to be in the starting line-up, and he became our point of attack defender, like Wiggs was before.
“And so, with Wiggs leaving, that opened a void on this team because Jimmy’s not that,” Kerr stated.
After having surgery for a torn UCL in his right thumb earlier this summer, Moody surprisingly credits the injury for improving his shooting. He said it forced him to pay closer attention to his release, helping him to refine his mechanics.
Moody is now a crucial member of the Warriors, with Kerr often starting him due to his significant contributions to the team.
If Moody continues performing at this level, the Warriors may build around him long-term.
Defence is where he stands out most, especially as Golden State’s top option against quick guards. His impact there could be key for them moving forward.
